Outdoor rattan furniture - all weather garden furniture - as seen at Chelsea Flower Show

Focus on design for the patio, gliding transitions between indoors and out are attracting a keen interest in well-designed Outdoor furniture.

The tendency can clearly be seen in the Cane-Line Outdoor collection , which introduces no less than five new designs by Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen. The transition between indoors and out is becoming less and less distinct.

Architecture is clearly leading the way by deliberately blurring the boundaries. Walls and floors running uninterrupted from the living room to the terrace, large glass sections with no visible frames, and exclusive new properties and flats with transparent balconies overlooking the harbour, all allow a direct view into the living room. Interest is drawn immediately onto furniture design in the outdoor area. “These indistinct boundaries between indoors and outdoors make far higher demands on furnishings in the outdoor space,” say furniture designers Peter Hiort-Lorenzen and Johannes Foersom, Members of Danish Designers.

The trend towards real designer furniture for outdoor use is clearly expressed in the Cane-line Outdoor collection , with as many as five new furniture items developed in close collaboration with two of Denmark’s leading contemporary designers, Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen.“People are becoming far more strongly aware of furnishings in the outdoor space in the same way as they furnish their homes indoors. There is a demand in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe and on markets further afield, for modern Scandinavian-designed outdoor furniture,” comments Brian Djernes, director of Cane-line, on this intense interest in designer furniture. The five new items, which will be launched at IMM on 15 - 21 January, are: Kingston Dining – a new series of Outdoor dining chairs, Kingston dining table with a woven top, Kingston pouffe – as a footstool or table, Kingston Sunchair – a striking and amusing sun-chair, Trinity chair – a light, stackable café chair with three legs.

These five product series, consisting of twelve different products altogether, strongly highlight the unique collaboration with Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen MDD, which started experimentally as a development project at the international Furniture Fair in Copenhagen in 2004. The Kingston Lounge series includes a sofa, easy chair, coffee table and stool, the Shellton dining chair and the fun-loving Explore rocking chair. All Cane-line furniture is hand woven from the original Hularo® fibre, a high-tech fibre that provides extreme comfort. At the same time the furniture is maintenance free, and can simply be wiped over with a damp cloth.

Outdoor – right on the mark five times Design combines with comfort in the new Kingston chair. A smart cane-woven dining table, a light café chair, a luxurious pouffe and a fun-loving sun chair by Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen are among the new designs in the Cane-line Outdoor collection . The Outdoor furniture of today is designer furniture, so it is expected to be comfortable, look smart and harmonise with the outdoor environment. It is also important, however, that the furniture is easy to pack away in the off-season. In the newly developed Kingston chair the furniture designers have succeeded in fulfilling the demands of good design, comfort and the practical considerations of transport and storage. They have also consciously worked on the interplay of form and function in the other items. The design also allows for logistics:“Stackability is in fact an important requirement in a global world, where furniture may have to be transported across continents, and will then be used in private homes, where things need to be stored out of the way in the off season,” explains Johannes Foersom.

The designers exploit the material to the full: the high-tech original Hularo@loom fibre enables them to unite modern technology and design with traditional cane craftsmanship at Cane-line’s own factories and workshops in the Far East. Kingston Dining – a chair to make a striking impression. The new dining chair complements the Kingston lounge series, which consists of a two-seater sofa, an armchair, a coffee table and a stool. To fit with the dining table, the new version of the chair is taller, slimmer, and not quite so deep. The designers of Kingston have tried to emphasise the qualities of the materials by giving the fine, hand-woven Hularo® loom fibre free play overlarge, concave surfaces. The expression achieved through the geometric shapes and simple forms emphasises the Scandinavian design of today.“Kingston is a chair with a big footprint and a confident style, and it is comfortable to sit in, both during the meal and for coffee afterwards,” as the furniture designers Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort Lorenzen MDD explain. The new dining table to go with the chairs is large and round, taking full advantage of the hand weaving technique in a smart geometrical pattern under a glass sheet. The geometric expression in the simple conical table underframe is a perfect match for the chairs. Kingston Dining is the latest addition to the Kingston series, which also includes a lounge series with a sofa, easy chair, coffee table and stool.

Trinity – the light café chair is a light chair that furniture designers Johannes Foersom and PeterHiort-Lorenzen see it as a perfect union of design and functionality. With only three legs, it possesses a light elegance that is underlined by the“body” in which the back and armrests merge into one. The weaving is used to advantage in a concave surface through which the rays of the sun play on transparency. Trinity is ideal for a balcony, a little morning terrace or a quiet corner of the garden. It is easy to stack and stow away. Another design that is right on the mark from the creative minds of designers Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen. Trinity is available in mocha. The chair designed for the sun. The Kingston Sunchair catches the rays of the sun like a parabolic dish. Or perhaps a cone that reaches up to the sun and at the same time and is protective at the same time. It is a sunchair that just invites you to bask in it, put your feet up and unwind. It is a distinctive piece of furniture with its own geometric form. The highback is hand woven from original Hularo®fibre in a smart peacock fan. It just lets the sun shine through in unbroken rays, so the chair looks light and merges into its natural surroundings. This is the chair to fulfil your dreams of floating in seclusion, pleasantly shielded from the rest of the world. It provides the perfect opportunity to build a nest of cushions and extend it with one of the conical pouffes – or several – to support your legs or as a table for soothing fruits and drinks. The Kingston Sunchair is stackable and available in mocha. A conical pouffe is another addition to the Kingston series. It can be used with a cushion to support your legs as you sit in the chair, or without a cushion as a super-practical side table that is easy to move around on the terrace or in the garden. The high priority given to life outdoors in the garden and on the terrace is reflected in the success of the large Cane-line garden pavilions. A pavilion creates an extra room in the garden with shade from the sun to eat lunch in, or to sit long after supper time without getting chilly as the dew falls. Pavilions have become a great hit, because many people find them more flexible than glass-covered patios. This year the pavilion has become even more luxurious, and a cabriolet version is available, so it is now possible to open the roof during dinner, and then close it again with one simple movement, when the dew falls. There are curtains made of weather-resistant material to keep insects out, and they provide about 50% shelter from the wind, so you can shelter behind the tent canvas and sunbathe under the open sky!

Luxury is basking in the sun on a comfortable sunbed. There are several to choose from in the Cane-line Outdoor collection . Hot summer days in the garden, by the pool or by the seaside. The sheer luxury and self-indulgence of lying back and enjoying the summer stretched out on a comfortable sunbed. A sunbed is first and foremost intended for sunbathing, but it is equally good for relaxing with a good book under a parasol. It is simply the ultimate in enjoying life. Either when you need to relax after a hot, hectic day at work, or when you can have a whole day off you can simply enjoy. Remember you should always have a big bowl of juicy fruit, iced tea or cold fruit juice within reach. Cane-line is introducing several new additions to the Outdoor collection , which includes a wide range of sunbeds in different styles, from the classic English chaise longue, Lansing, to the simply designed new Belmont sunbed that matches the lounge style. Belmont is streamlined and uncluttered to match the lounge milieu, either wheels also make it easy to move about. The Lansing chaise longue has a more romantic expression reminiscent of the relaxed attitude to life of the English upper classes. A classic that never goes out of fashion. Preston is a sunbed in a simple design, and is easy to move around. For those planning for summer with the family, the 115cm wide double version may be a good idea. Preston is available in a loose, light weave, while the mocha version in loom-weave is called Presley. Lansing is a series that adds a touch of nostalgia from Grandma’s garden to the comfort of summer. This is a new version of the traditional sofa-swing, made in the uniquely attractive weave that characterises Cane-line Outdoor furniture. Somerset is the cosy sunbed with wheels to move it about. It is being introduced in black for the first time, to match the other black Outdoor furniture. All items are of course woven from synthetic, Hularo® fibres, which make Cane-line Outdoor furniture durable and resistant to wind and weather.
